JRC Alternative High School
JRC Alternative High School (AHS) is a school for youth aged 13-21 years old, who have been classified by a child study team and referred out of district for educational services. Classes take place from 8:30 am to 2:15 pm. Transportation is provided by the sending school district. The students come to AHS because their previous high school was not providing an appropriate and stimulating environment to meet their particular needs. They are referred to AHS, which provides a smaller setting.
What happens when the students get here? An interview is conducted with the child and parent. A child study team worker highlights individual student social background and academic challenges. AHS customizes an appropriate technique for each student according to the results of his or her Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The students are then assigned to classes and begin attending AHS.
Once a student becomes part of AHS, the goal of the staff is to have the student connect with the program to trigger an interest in learning. Thus, the challenge is to tap into the student's interests to develop a sense of belonging and a level of confidence. The student is then able to experience and take advantage of all the opportunities offered here at the Alternative School. The high school provides several options for students after graduation. Some go onto the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services and are given the option of a possible career. Other students who demonstrate aptitude and interest go on to college.
